Appear – Kick off

The objective of the new programme appear is to strengthen institutional capacities in higher education, research and management in the key regions of the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) through academic partnerships with Austrian academic institutions and Master's and PhD Programmes as a contribution to sustainable reduction of poverty.

The kick off event of appear took place on 24 March 2010 in Vienna. Please find the programme, the presentations (only available in German) and the pictures on our website.

An information event for scholars (in English) took place on 15 April 2010 in Vienna. The powerpoint presentation in English can be found here.


Calls for proposals - Deadlines

First call

While the first call for preparatory funding and for grants closed on 30 April 2010 (see results below), the call for academic partnerships is still open.

Gender mainstreaming

Incorporating the perspective of gender relations in all processes, activities and measures is an essential aspect of appear and will play an integral role in the evaluation process. Please also bear in mind the following requirements regarding the content of the project:

  • Demand-driven approach: The proposed activities are based on institutional and societal needs in the Southern country.
  • Relevance of the partnership and relevance of the Master’s and PhD thesis for development in the partner country, specifically in relation to the thematic focus of the programme
  • Preference of partnerships and Master’s and PhD grants which demonstrate a relation to the thematic focus of the respective region or country of the ADC
  • Gender is systematically integrated in the project plan
  • Professional expertise and stated interest in relation to the thematic focus and the capacity development activities of the partnership
  • Participatory approaches and well-balanced ownership between the partners
  • Result orientation and sustainability

First call - Results

Preparatory Funding - Accepted Projects

During its first session on 31 May 2010, the Selection Board accepted 10 project proposals for preparatory funding:

  • 10 preparatory projects accepted for funding
  • 126.351,09 Euro granted in total
  • 2 of the accepted projects are coordinated by the Southern partner institutions, 8 by the Austrian partner institutions
  • 2 of the project coordinators are women
  • 1 project focuses on gender mainstreaming

Selection Board

The Selection Board awards funding for both components of the Austrian Partnership Programme in Higher Education and Research for Development – appear.

It decides about

  • the awarding of funds for academic partnerships
  • the awarding of preparatory funding for the initiation and development of new partnerships
  • the awarding of Master's and PhD grants
